Keening: Voices of the Stranding

The Keening is a multidisciplinary art and music project, with accompanying podcast and oral testimony gathering. It has the close involvement of the local community, the cetacean stranding research and rescue communities, and the wider community of cetacean researchers and scientists.

[The Keening is] a collective day of remembrance on Traigh Mhòr beach, honouring the 55 long-finned pilot whales stranding in 2023. Join us as we create sand sculptures of the whales, accompanied by live music shaped by their voices. As the tide returns, the sculptures will be gently reclaimed by the sea.

Phil Hall is leading the photographic element of the project, recording key moments in the development of the art work, the Keening event itself, and portraits of those community members who choose to share their stories with us.

The images will be used to illustrate a book that will accompany the Keening project, and the exhibition that is being developed around the artwork, music and testimonies.

UCI Cycling World Championships 2023 at Glentress

While Spindrift Podcast host Aoife Glass was on the in-venue MC team, Phil Hall roamed the race venue for the duration of the cross-country mountain bike World Championship events in Glentress Forest in the Tweed Valley, Scotland. Five days of epic racing saw the world’s best cross-country mountain bikers descend on the valley, pitting their stamina and skill against one another and a technical race track. His photos capture the spirit of the occasion, with incredible racing, an electric atmosphere, great fan support, and some of the biggest names in XC (and road) in action, including Evie Richards, Tom Pidcock, Sam Gaze, Puck Pieterse, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, Peter Sagan and more.

Below are a sample of his photographs from the event, and there are more to come. If you’re interested in any, get in touch.
