I’m Aoife, and I’m a writer, presenter and producer with a passion for sharing stories of people, places, communities, nature and the environment.

I started out as a science communicator with a background in natural history. I worked for over ten years at the Natural History Museum in London with scientists to create and present daily live events for the public, on everything from dinosaurs and meteorites to forensic pathology and deep sea fish. I hosted live video links to fieldwork sites around the world, and created Crime Scene Live, an award-winning immersive event where visitors teamed up with real forensic scientists to solve a (fictional!) murder.

The call of adventure and a love of cycling pulled me towards journalism. I worked as a writer and editor for major UK publishers including OurMedia and Future Media, on titles including BikeRadar, MBR, MBUK and Cycling Plus. As a freelancer, I’ve written for Red Bull Media House, Countryfile Magazine, BBC Wildlife Magazine/Discover Wildlife, Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots and the Ordnance Survey, and contributed a chapter to Lonely Planet’s Britain’s Best Bike Rides. I’ve also presented and compered at events and festivals, including Enduro World Series races in Scotland and Italy, the 2023 Cycling World Championships, and on BBC 5Live.

It all comes back to helping people tell their stories and finding new ways to bring an audience in. Audio is where that feels most natural to me: it’s intimate, and it gives people room to be properly heard.

I founded Spindrift in 2023 to share stories of women in cycling and adventure. It won Best Sports Podcast at the Independent Podcast Awards that year and was shortlisted in the Sports Podcast Awards. My current project, Keening, a creative audio project about the 2023 whale stranding on Lewis, was a finalist in the 2024 Whicker Podcast Prize at Sheffield DocFest, with a special mention for its evocative and immersive use of sound.
